File Extensions

• File extensions such as WCU are used by operating systems to differentiate between different kinds of files, to categorize them, so that the operating system and other computer software know how to use those files. Various file extensions are associated with different programs by the operating system, so that when you try to use or run a certain kind of file, the associated software is called upon to do that for you. In this way, file extensions are an indispensable part of computer software.
  
  

CueCard

• CueCard, which is the program associated with the WCU file extension, is a program published by Wade Brainerd. It is free and runs on a several different versions of the Windows operating system. CueCard simulates flash cards, which are a popular study method where a question is written on one side of the card, with the answer being on the back. The person being quizzed reads the front of the card and tries to guess the answer on the back.
  
  

WCU Files

• According to FileExt, which is an extensive database of known associations of file extensions, there is only one known association for the file extension WCU, which is the CueCard program. According to File Extensions, a site similar to FileExt, the WCU files are the saved flash cards, or questions and answers. If you wrote a set of study questions for a class and wanted to share them with a friend who also had the CueCard program, you could give her the relevant WCU files and the friend would be able to load your questions and answers in her version of CueCard.
  
  

Determining File Extensions

• There are several different ways to determine what the file extension of a particular file is. One easy way is to right-click on the file then click on "Properties," which will bring up the properties of the file in a new window. Near the top it will read "Type of file:" and beside that will be the name of the file as well as the file extension, and below that, the program that is used to open that kind of file. By clicking on the button "Change..." you could change the program associated with that file type, though besides CueCard, there is no other program that opens WCU files.
