Hairstyles for Ultra Thin Hair

    A Great Haircut

    • The best way to give thin hair more body is by getting a perfect haircut. Usually, short styles are best for thin hair. Long styles can look straggly and weigh hair down. Get choppy layers that are close together (far-apart layers cause hair to lose too much bulk). You can also ask for shorter layers underneath a long layer. The bottom layers will lift the top and add volume. Try shoulder-length or shorter--bobs and pixie cuts look adorable on most face shapes and work wonderfully with thin hair.

Consider getting bangs. They'll instantly spruce up a boring, limp hairstyle. Straight bangs are flattering on a lot of people, side-swept bangs with choppy edges even more so.

Color can be used to disguise thin hair, and hair dyes add body to the hair shaft by depositing color and making the shaft thicker. Well-placed highlights will add depth and dimension to your hair, giving the illusion of more thickness. If your scalp is showing through, a lighter hair color that matches your scalp will help to disguise that.

    Keep it Healthy

    • Teasing and blow-drying your hair are well-known tricks for adding volume. Both can be damaging, however, and the last thing you want is hair that's not only thin, but dry and damaged. Let your hair air dry every now and then. For nondamaging volume, try scrunching (grabbing hair with your hand and pushing upward towards your roots to create a wave) with thickening hair products. Drying your hair in braids or Velcro rollers are good ways to get body.

Give hair weekly deep conditioning treatments (olive oil is a simple, effective moisturizer for dry hair), and avoid shampoos with harsh detergents.

Don't spend too long in the sun without protecting your hair. UV rays can damage fragile, thin hair. Likewise, hair straighteners and curling irons are intense sources of heat and should be avoided.

    Disguise With Accessories

    • If you've got especially thin spots, headbands and clips are perfect for hiding the areas. Place a wide headband (or a scarf) at the crown of your head to cover a thinning top. Pull hair back into a braid or a bun to disguise overall thinness or to cover thin spots with thicker hair. Cute clips can be placed over thin spots or used to pull extra hair over those areas.

Want even more coverage? Get an accessory with fake hair attached. These are much cheaper than hair extensions (and much less damaging). You can get clips with attached hair or ponytail holders with fake ponytails. Find one in a color that most closely matches your hair.
