How to Make an Empire Waist Tutu

104 14

    Preparation

    • 1). Make the pattern. For the bust piece, take three bust measurements: 1) under the armpit; 2) around the center of the chest over the nipples; and 3) under the breast. Use the measurement of the center of the chest to determine the width of the breast piece.

    • 2). Draw a rectangle on the newspaper the length of the center measurement and 5 to 8 inches high (depending on the size of the person who will be wearing the tutu).

    • 3). To make the skirt piece, measure the desired length from the bust line to the hem. Add 2 inches to that measurement. Draw a horizontal line the length of the measurement under the breast plus 2 inches. Measure the length from that line at both ends and mark it on the newspaper. Measure out from each marking an equal amount so that the total width of the bottom line is 44 inches. Draw lines from each side of the top to the bottom lines.

    • 4). Cut the fabric: Lay out the bust piece on the tutu fabric and cut 1 inch outside the pattern piece. Cut at least two, more if you want a thicker bust. Lay the bust piece out on the lining fabric and trace the top and bottom lines with sewer's chalk. This will be your sewing line.

    • 5). Lay out the skirt piece and cut 1 inch outside the pattern piece. Cut four pieces of fabric for each layer of the tutu skirt. Cut at least five layers for the skirt (a total of at least 20 pieces).

    • 6). Set fabric or ribbon for waistline and shoulder straps aside until ready to measure and cut.

    Assembly

    • 1). First make the skirt: Stitch four panels of the skirt together from top to bottom. Close the circle of the skirt by leaving 4 inches open at the top. Make seams as narrow as possible (approximately a half-inch each). Repeat this for each layer. Stack the layers, each one inside another, and pin along the top. Hand-baste them all together.

    • 2). Next make the bust: Lay the tutu fabric on top of the right side of the lining. Pin and hand-baste in place.

    • 3). Machine-baste the top of the skirt close to the edge. Make two rows of basting.
Pull the basting thread to gather the skirt. Make the gathers even all around the top of the skirt.

    • 4). Turn the bust inside out and lay it over the skirt. The bust should be outside the skirt. With right sides together, pin the bottom of the bust to the top of the skirt. Match the opening at the back on both sides.

    • 5). Machine stitch, trim the seam and press toward the skirt.

    Finishing

    • 1). Measure the decorative ribbon and pin it over the bust line. Hand-stitch it in place or top-stitch with the machine.

    • 2). Try the dress on and measure the length needed for the straps. Cut the ribbon to the desired length and pin in place. Take off the dress and hand-stitch or machine-stitch the straps to the dress.

    • 3). Put the zipper in the back according to the directions on the package.

    • 4). Trim all loose threads.
