LeapFrog: Math Adventure to the Moon - Guide Review for Parents

LeapFrog has made a name for themselves making entertainment for children that is both educational and fun. The educational DVDs released by LeapFrog have become little teaching assistants to moms and preschool teachers everywhere, and Math Adventure to the Moon follows in that great tradition by presenting preschoolers with all kinds of foundational mathematical skills all found within an animated story that is exciting and fun.

What preschooler doesn't love the idea of rocketing into space? LeapFrog makes math an adventure by having Lily and Tad, long time friends of preschoolers, blast off in a story that shows kids why math really is everywhere.

The math concepts easily work into the story, and the music helps kids to remember many of the concepts taught in the movie. As kids watch Tad and Lily count, sort, and sing, they see not only an example of how to use early math skills, but also examples of how math is used practically to accomplish tasks and reach goals.

Since many preschoolers can already count to 10, I would have loved to have seen more emphasis on numbers 10-20. Every preschooler seems to get stuck on those teen numbers. Each of my own children had their own specific number that they would always skip when counting to 20. Songs counting up to 10 are easy to find, but the rest of the numbers up to 20 are the challenge, and how can kids grasp skip counting if they can't remember 14?

Math Adventure to the Moon does introduce a variety of concepts in an engaging way, though, so kids and parents will be happy with this educational adventure. Also, a great follow-up to this DVD is LeapFrog: Math Circus, which gives kids a little intro into how numbers work together with lessons on adding, subtracting and more.
