- 1). Find a long, straight branch or stick that is thick and sturdy.
- 2). Use your hands or a hunting knife to remove any twigs from the branch.
- 3). Wittle the tip of the branch into a point with your hunting knife. Continue to sharpen the point until you have a smooth, sharp point.
- 4). Temper and sharpen the tip in the fire. You can make the tip of your spear stronger and sharper by tempering it. Hold the tip over a flame until it catches on fire. As soon as it catches on fire, take it away from the flame and sharpen the tip by rubbing it against a rock. Continue to do this until you are satisfied with the sharpness of the point.
- 5). Barb the tip with your knife. Use your hunting knife to wedge out little barbs along the tip of the spear. This will help you hold on to the fish when the spear penetrates it.
