How to Fish With Tube Bait
- 1). Place a jig head with attached hook through the opening in the hollow-body tube bait, guiding the head through the plastic toward the front of the bait.
- 2). Push the jig head through the plastic tip of the tube bait so the eye to the hook is exposed. The hook will now be inside the tube bait.
- 3). Tie the eye of the hook directly to the main line using a clinch knot (see References).
- 4). Cast the tube bait behind the breaking waves when surf fishing, allowing the lure to sink.
- 5). Retrieve the tube bait through the surf using a stop-and-go cranking of the reel handle while pulling up sharply on the rod tip every five seconds to simulate a bait fish in distress.
- 6). Drop the lure off the stern of the boat for trolling, letting the line out behind the boat about 50 to 75 feet.
- 7). Rig a tube bait as described in Step 2 for freshwater fishing and add a hollow 1/4- to 1/2-oz. egg sinker about 6 to 9 inches up the main line. This weight helps improve casting accuracy when fishing around structures such as pier pilings, lily pads and submerged brush.
