Things to Consider

Substance abuse is a serious concern, which affects millions of people in the country.

Many people are dealing with a substance abuse addiction for drugs and or alcohol. The National Council on Drug and Alcohol Dependence Inc. estimates that 1 in 12 adults have a dependency, and millions are also affected by drug abuse. Addiction is a debilitating disease that negatively impacts the lives of the users and the lives of those around them. No one wins with an addiction; so seeking help at a substance abuse rehab treatment center is an important factor in getting sober. Here are some things to consider when seeking treatment for substance abuse.

1. What type of treatment center is it?

There are many different types of substance abuse rehab treatment centers available for people to enter. Some may allow people to get help while they are still living their lives at home and at work or school. These are referred to as outpatient treatment centers. A group therapy (such as an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting) would be an example of an outpatient treatment center. An inpatient treatment center is the opposite of an outpatient treatment center, where a person voluntarily enters a safe and secure facility outside his or her home to receive treatment for his/her addictions. Whether a person decides to go to an inpatient or an outpatient treatment center depends on the person and the resources the center provides.

2. Where is the treatment center?

The location of the substance abuse rehab treatment center can make a big difference in whether or not a person goes there for treatment. Some people will want to receive treatment close to home, where things are familiar. However, this can be a problem because seeing the same triggers (for example, the bar where one would go for a drink after work) can make recovery and sobriety harder to achieve. Therefore many people will choose to seek treatment in an inpatient facility in a new environment, giving them a new chance and new perspective to deal with their addiction and make the positive changes toward sobriety.

3. What type of services does the treatment center provide?

Getting treatment at a substance abuse rehab treatment center is an important step toward sobriety, but the services provided at the treatment center and at the treatment program can vary. For example, students might want to look into attending a drug free school during and after their treatment program to help support and assist them in their sobriety. Families affected by drug and alcohol abuse might want to consider a family treatment program, and that even includes the people in the family who are not addicted to drugs and alcohol. Learning about the specific programs the treatment center provides will help the person and his or her loved ones choose the best treatment plan possible.

Substance abuse rehab is only the first step to recovery, but as so, the first step is one of the most important steps because it starts the path to receiving substance abuse treatment, which creates positive change and lifetime of sobriety.
