Inexpensive Adult Costume Ideas

    Box of Wine

    • Find a tall cardboard box that is also thin enough to allow you to hold your hands together in front of you. Cut a hole at the top for your head. Measure and cut holes on each side of the box for your arms so they can rest comfortably when wearing the costume. Make an enlarged color copy of a purchased box of wine to glue to the front of the box or create your own image. For a realistic effect, duct tape the plastic bag of wine found in the box to the inside of your costume. Cut a small hole for the spout. Friends can pour their own drinks directly from your costume.

    Zombie

    • Look through your own closet or make a trip to your local thrift store to create your zombie costume. Use your imagination with this one and transform any character into a zombie: prom date, bride or groom, gym teacher, aerobics instructor or even Santa Claus. Use costume makeup to paint your face and hands shades of white, green and black. Paint gray and black around the eyes. Dishevel your hair and add fake blood around your mouth for that "flesh-eating" effect.

    Tourist

    • Dress up as the quintessential tourist for a comical costume. Check your own closet, borrow items from friends or visit a thrift store to complete your look. Start with a bright tropical print shirt. Add khaki shorts, a big hat, sunglasses, knee socks and a camera around your neck. Carry a map or guide book in your pocket. For a beach tourist, wear tall socks with sandals and sunscreen on your nose. Don't forget the fanny pack.

    Jellyfish

    • Transform into a giant jellyfish using an umbrella for the head and raffia or yarn for the tentacles. This costume is a little more time-consuming but still unique and inexpensive. Purchase a cheap, clear umbrella or spray paint one you already have red or blue, or a combination of the two. Buy red and/or blue yarn, raffia or another tentacle-like string found at a craft store. Use a hot glue gun to glue the tentacles to the inside edge of the umbrella. Have the tentacles touch the ground for a dramatic effect, or end around your waist for easier mobility. Wear coordinating colors to match your umbrella.
