How to Man an Alaska Salmon Fishing Rig

    • 1). Attach an inline spinner to the end of the monofilament fishing line with a terminal knot such as the palomar or uni knot. Moisten the knot before pulling it tight and trim excess line from the knot with scissors. Choose lures with brightly colored blades including chartreuse and hot pink.

    • 2). Observe the river before making any casts. Look for pockets of water or shallow runs of slower water beside fast moving currents. Look for signs of salmon in these slower areas, as they do not typically like fast currents.

    • 3). Cast the lure upstream of the pocket or slow-moving water. Allow the current to wash the inline spinner down into the slow run or pocket. Maintain a taut line as the lure travels downstream so that you can detect a strike.

    • 4). Allow a salmon to take the lure before setting the hook. Reel down on the line as you raise the rod tip to set the hook in the salmon's lip. Maintain constant pressure on the fish as you guide it toward you through the water.
