Activities for Younger Children

Little Hands on the Farm: Children gather eggs, plant seeds, dig up plastic vegetables, sell the crop and receive money for their work to spend at the grocery store. They get to turn in the fruits of their labor for money that's exchanged for animal crackers and other snacks. It's totally free and a great photo opportunity too.

Pig Races: See pigs fly daily. Free.

The Children's Aquarium at Fair Park: The historic Dallas Aquarium was redesigned and renamed The Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park. It offers hands-on wonders and experiences like a touch pool filled with sea stars, sea urchins and anemones. The new aquarium made its debut last year.

Children's Medical Center Barnyard: A petting zoo (free).

Starlight Parade: Starts at 7:15 p.m. nightly. Illuminated parade floats, music, clowns.

Mother Goose Storytime: Mother Goose recites your child's favorite tales at the big tent on the lawn near the Hall of State. Free.

Top 10 Foods from the State Fair of Texas

It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it. Here are my picks for the Top 10 State Fair foods. And yes, most of them were deep fried. I took two aspirin before I went to the Fair and I survived it! Of course I shared food with my husband, daughter and nephews too. I didn't sample them all one day either. No, it takes several days of hard work to prepare for this report.More »

Gluten-Free Foods at the State Fair of Texas

Photo Gallery: State Fair Foods

The number one reason I go to the State Fair of Texas is to sample some interesting foods. Yes, most of them are deep fried but most of them are delicious! And State Fair food is a "sometimes food" because the fair only lasts a few weeks. You can exercise from November until mid-September in anticipation. Right?

Fried Lemonade makes it worth the price of admission. And you can't go to the fair without the traditional Fletcher's Corny Dog. They're simply the best (if you're going to eat deep-fried, processed food). But like I said, it's once a year.More »

College Football Games Played in the Cotton Bowl

Two incredible football games are played in the legendary Cotton Bowl Stadium. While alcoholic beverages are served at the State Fair, they are not available inside the stadium.

Grambling vs. Prairie View on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic. Don't miss the battle of the two amazing bands at halftime.

The Cotton Bowl hosts one of the biggest football rivalries ever -- Texas vs. OU -- otherwise known as the Red River Rivalry. Texans call it the Texas-OU game. Okies call it the OU-Texas game. Whatever you call it, it's an exciting matchup of potential BSC candidates. The stadium will be 50 percent red and 50 percent burnt orange. It's a great experience. If you live in the great state of Texas, then you are a longhorn for a day. In 2014, the Red River Rivalry is set for Saturday, October 11.

The Addams Family

The Addams Family runs from October 2-21, 2012(closed Mondays). A ticket to the musical includes free admission to the 2012 State Fair of Texas on the day of the performance. Don't want to drive? DART is just outside the theater! See Dallas Summer Musicals for ticket info and times.More »

Poll: Corn Dog vs. Corny Dog

It's your turn ot decide on what you think is the correct name of the State Fair's most popular item. Is it "corn dog" or "corny dog." Vote here.

Oh by the way, it's corny dog. Ok, that's my opinion and I'm a native Texan.More »

Big Tex

Big Tex is the one who welcomes you to the State Fair of Texas with that resounding voice -- saying, "Howdy folks." The 2014 State Fair of Texas marks the 62nd year Big Tex welcomes visitors to Fair Park.
But 2012 will always be known as the year Big Tex burned to the ground -- leaving only his hands in tact and a metal skeleton behind. I don't think anyone could have imagined the outpouring of love and support that came after his demise. A funeral was held for mourners and someone even placed a corny dog bouquet at the site where the 60-year-old icon once stood. The newer version of the Texas icon was unveiled during the 2013 State Fair of Texas. Long Live Big Tex.More »
