    • There are several options for treating anxiety that do not involve a prescription from your primary care doctor. Herbs, relaxation techniques, exercise and deep breathing are all methods that can reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

      Specific herbs help reduce anxiety, often acting as a natural tranquilizer. Such herbs are: passionflower, hops, chamomile, kava kava, St. John's Wart and ginko biloba. These are said to have less side effects than prescription medications, though following recommended dosage is essential.

      Vitamins and minerals, like calcium, magnesium, zinc, b complex and selenium help regulate the mood and reduce anxiety.

      Relaxation exercises such as Taiji and QiGong work to naturally reduce the stress and anxiety levels in the body. Deep breathing is also a form of relaxation exercise that can decrease stress levels.

      Regular exercise, approximately 30 minutes daily, works to reduce the duration and severity of panic attacks as well as decrease overall stress levels.

      Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of mental health therapy. It is typically done either one-on-one or in a group setting with a certified or licensed counselor. CBT treatment can coincide with prescription medications but also with herbal treatments.
