Planes, trains and automobiles? The Museum of Transportation has them all and more. The museum is a must-see stop for anyone who loves historic vehicles of any kind. Here's information on what to see and do at the Museum of Transportation.

Location and Hours:

The Museum of Transportation is located on nearly 130 acres at 3015 Barrett Station Road in west St.

Louis County, near the intersection of I-270 and Dougherty Ferry Road. From 270, take the Dougherty Ferry exit and go west to Barrett Station Road. Turn left on Barrett Station and follow the signs to the museum entrances.

The Museum of Transportation is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's closed on most major holidays including Easter, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Admission Prices:

Admission to the museum is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages three to 12. Kids two and younger get in free. Tickets to ride the miniature train are $4 a person for unlimited rides. The train runs every 20 minutes throughout the day.

What to See:

The biggest draw for many visitors is the impressive collection of more than 70 locomotives, including many historic and one-of-a-kind steam engines. You can climb aboard a massive "Big Boy" engine, the largest successful steam locomotive ever built, or wander through passenger cars, freight cars and more.

A great way to learn about the history of these trains is to take one of the free guided tours given by museum volunteers. The tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.

While trains are a big part of the museum, they aren't the only thing worth seeing. Stop by the Earl C. Lindburg Automobile Center to view the museum's collection of classic cars and trucks. For the Kids:

The Museum of Transportation has a special play area for young kids called Creation Station. It's filled with all kinds of transportation related toys like Thomas and Chuggington. There's also a child-size kitchen, puppet show and train station. Tickets to Creation Station are $2 a person (ages one and older) and each play session lasts for one hour. Creation Station sessions are Monday through Friday at 9:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. There is an additional session at 1 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
