It felt it was only a matter of time before global computer juggernauts Dell would try their hand at creating a mobile phone. Fellow competitors Acer have already got themselves ahead however with the release of several phones. Nevertheless, the Venue Pro is the first Dell mobile phone to enter the UK. Will this device amount to the expectation and reputation that already circulates this massive company?
Immediately we can comment on the eye-catching 4.1 inch 16M-colour AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla glass display. However, as well as a touchscreen interface the Venue Pro also offers a pull-out QWERTY keypad. As a result of the phone being quite large, the keyboard does benefit as it is easy to type on.
We can also notice that Dell have adopted the new Windows 7 operating system for their debut UK effort. This operating system allows users access to all of their Microsoft services such as Windows Live Messenger, SkyDrive and XBOX Live. In addition to this it features a full Microsoft Office suite as well as Zune for syncing multi-media wirelessly.
This operating system does have its drawbacks though; for example it does depend too much on the Zune function for multi-media syncing and also does not offer Bluetooth file transfer.
In terms of connectivity, this device offers the standard of what can be expected from the higher end of the market. The Venue Pro comes with 3G, Wi Fi, Bluetooth and microUSB capabilities. This widespread connectivity works very well with the range of online features available to the phone.
The camera on the device is 5 mega pixels with autofocus and geo-tagging facilities available. Video recording is also available to users.
A phone that does appear to be a remarkable first effort from Dell. However, it is perhaps difficult to see this phone appealing to anyone outside of the business market.
