"Tomorrow, When the War Began" Should Kick Butt In North America

We got to check out "Tomorrow, When the War Began" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and this promising movie looks like it should have a sale locked up very quickly.
"Tomorrow, When the War Began" is based on the internationally best selling Australian novel by John Marsden, which is the first in a long series of seven books that have sold well over two million copies in Australia and New Zealand.
In a Red Dawn meets Taps from Down Under Australian way, "Tomorrow" tells the story of a group of high school teenagers who take an end of the year camping trip.
Sounds like the typical suspense movie right? Well, this one is somewhat different.
When these kids return home they find that all their houses have been deserted, and all the phone lines and power lines have been cut.
These high schoolers soon find out that their country has been invaded, and suddenly they are thrust into a battle of life and death against the deadly occupying force.
This is where the Red Dawn meets Taps comparison comes in and it works wonderfully for this film.
Obviously, the timing of what's going on in our world works in this film's favor, so that could either work for or against it, depending on the week it gets released here in North America.
"Tomorrow, When the War Began" has already been released in Australia, but there's no distributor set for North America and thus the special screening at TIFF which was the perfect showcase for this film.
In a nutshell, "Tomorrow" manages to be so much more exciting, fun and intelligent than most of the movies supposedly made for teen audiences.
Many times, these films still leave out a large segment of the teen market that want more substance over the fluff of Twilight and those types of teen movies.
"Tomorrow, When the War Began" is a very gripping story with well-drawn, ordinary young teens who have everything at stake fighting for their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
It has every chance of being a smash hit, here and elsewhere, and deserves the chance to grow.
We do hope that this film is given a chance in today's market since it's a little darker, but people could use a film like this to remind us that our freedoms are very much worth fighting for.
What makes "Tomorrow" so important is that it's very informative and should be of interest to anyone who cares about freedoms and the delicate balance it takes to keep them from being exploited.
