William Faulkner Slept Here: Faulkner House Books in the French Quarter

106 11

Though Oxford, Mississippi is the city that most people associate with American novelist William Faulkner, he actually lived and wrote in New Orleans for quite some time. Well before he won his Pulitzer Prizes or became a Nobel Laureate, he published his first novel, Soldier's Joy, while living in a first-floor apartment in an old Creole townhouse in the heart of the French Quarter. He was 27 years old when the book was published.

That building is now home to Faulkner House Books, a bookstore that specializes in Southern literature and Louisiana history, and deals in new, used, and antiquarian editions of those genres, as well as other fiction and non-fiction of all kinds.

The bookstore is in one of the most poetic places in New Orleans, Pirate's Alley, in the shadow of the St. Louis Cathedral and just a stone's throw from Jackson Square.

For book-lovers visiting New Orleans, Faulkner House Books is an essential stop. The friendly and helpful staff alone make it a cozy, homey place to stop in and get some thoughtful advice about the city, and the extensive selection of books and fascinating building history just make it that much sweeter.

Faulkner House Books is located at 624 Pirate's Alley. The store is open from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm seven days a week, every day except Mardi Gras Day, and will often open at off-hours upon request. Call (504) 524-2940 for more information, or visit Faulkner House online at www.faulknerhouse.net.
