Trancoso, Brazil
Jacaré do Brasil Casas, opened in late 2008 in Trancoso, Bahia, is Fernando Droghetti's incursion into the hotel industry after becoming known for his inspired arts and crafts business Jacaré do Brasil.
The five Jacaré do Brasil houses, whose beauty is enhanced by the use of native materials, stand in a secluded group right on the Quadrado, the charming grassy square that's the vital center of Trancoso life.
The gardens were designed by landscape artist Gilberto Elkis, and the decoration is the work of Sig Bergamin.
Each house has a deck as large as the indoor area (up to 110 square meters) with Quadrado and ocean views, as well as a kitchen where a maid prepares breakfast to order.
Optional services include from DVD delivery to massages and manicures. High-tech perks available: plasma TVs, DVD and MP3 players, wireless internet and cell phones.
Surrounded by a wooden deck with shaded areas thanks to mature native trees, the pool is close to the lounge, called Jacacau. The name signals a partnership with one of the most famous restaurants in Trancoso - nearby Cacau, specializing in Bahia cuisine.
Catados (which can be loosely translated as "finds"), or handcrafted furniture pieces discovered in Brazil travels and reinterpreted, helped create the signature Jacaré do Brasil style.
Together with specially designed furniture objects and utiliatarian objects, they used to fill one of the most charming stores in Trancoso and a store in the upscale Jardins district, in São Paulo, both closed down as the new project took flight.
However, the brand lives on: Jacaré do Brasil Casas doubles as a concept store. So if you love one of the vases in the house you're staying at, ask the price - it's probably for sale.
