    Addictive Properties

    • Talwin is a controlled substance that can be addictive. This seems to be more common for those patients who already have an addiction problem or those who are emotionally unstable. Individuals without these pre-existing conditions do not seem to become addicted when prescribed Talwin for pain.

    Most common side effects

    • The most common side effects of Talwin are similar to those of other analgesics. These include nausea and vomiting, dizziness and possible euphoria. Unless these effects continue for an extended period of time or impair daily functioning, they can be considered minor and not threatening to health.

    Other Side Effects

    • There are other side effects that can occur. Some of these are insomnia, respiratory problems, depression, visual problems and allergic reactions such as rashes and edema. As with any substance, side effects vary from individual to individual. Any effect should be reported and discussed with your medical provider. Any effect that causes changes in mental or physical health that can be life threatening should be cause for immediately seeking medical intervention.

    Drug Interactions

    • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) and Talwin can cause excitability and hypertension. Talwin can cause some central nervous system (CNS) depression, so taking it while using alcohol, antidepressants and phenothiazine (all also CNS depressants) can create extreme slowing of the nervous system and even death.

    Warning

    • Talwin is a serious medication. It should be taken only as prescribed. It is important that you ask questions and be informed about the drug before taking it. Advise your provider of any current medications in order to avoid negative medication interactions.
