Stephanie London at Work
A student of painting and fashion design, Stephanie London combined her love of art and clothes into a business. Today, she creates paintings and drawings of wedding dresses, for newlyweds who want to honor, London says, their wedding day in a unique way. Sometimes, these works of art are commissioned by friends or relatives or the groom himself as gifts for the bride.
After falling five stories from a building and spending a full year recovering, London decided she wanted to marry her two loves -- painting and dresses.
In 2004, her business was born. Wedding dresses were a natural fit because they are the most important and special piece of clothing a woman wears in her life. (While this is true, London has had a few clients request art work of Christening outfits.) Here, she offers examples of her drawings and paintings, which brides have displayed on tables at their wedding and grooms have given to their brides as anniversary gifts:
Wedding Dress as Art
Clients often e-mail photos of the dress they want painted or drawn to give London a starting point and inspiration. She says she prefers photos that include the bride actually wearing the dress.
Wedding Dress Art: Drawing on Nostalgia
"Each gown speaks to me, has its own essence of the way it should be presented," says London. Drawings of dresses start at $500. Even though London is in Wichita, Kansas, many of her clients come from the east and west coasts.
Wedding Dress Art: Bringing in the Details
Having multiple photos helps London hone in on details and get to know a bride, she says. Some brides have chosen to have art work of their dress done because the dress did not hold up through the dry cleaning process and they wanted something to remember it.
Wedding Dress Art: A Souvenir from the Big Day
"The wedding dress represents hope of a new life and relationship," says London. "You can reflect on it and pass it down." This drawing is based on the photo you saw on the previous page.
Wedding Dress Art: It's the Bride's Big Day
London says that couples sometimes request the tuxedo get placed in the painting or drawing as well. But every time, they decide against it after seeing a sample. The bride's wedding dress is the big winner. Here is another photo that London used to create a painting of a dress.
After seeing the previous wedding picture, London created this painting of the bride's dress. Paintings by London start at $1,200.
Here is another example of a painting London created of a wedding dress. What makes the wedding gown special, says London, is that it represents the belief most brides have at their wedding: "Life is hard, but the world will stand still for one day."
