Camping Cures a Relationship
Recently I was listening to a story about some people that I know who were experiencing marital problems.
I'm not an expert by any means, but it seems that the spark had gone out of their time together.
I don't think that they lost the spark for each other, as much as the lost the spark for their lives.
See, for 20 years they had lived their life around their children--taking them to sports practices, molding them at home to have the best character possible, and protecting them from the the evils of the outside world.
This is a full time job for parents that really want to be great at parenting.
Most parents will never actually think that they are good parents, but the fact that they struggle to mold their children everyday in the wake of adversity means that they must be.
Anyway, now these two individuals that spent a life time solving the problems of their children were in a sense-bored out of their minds.
This is where the story has its happy ending.
This couple spent this summer camping, by themselves.
Usually it was 3-4 days at a more rustic campsite.
They didn't go with friends and it really doesn't matter what type of gear they had.
What matters is they got out of their house and spent time together without anyone else interfering.
You can never have quality alone time in your house.
There is always another chore around the corner, a telephone waiting to ring, a TV and a computer waiting to do our thinking for us.
Camping was the perfect solution for this couple and it worked.
Their relationship was rekindled hence a happy ending.
I really felt like writing on this subject because lately I have seen so many of the friends that surround my family struggle with their marriages.
It seems to be an epidemic of sorrow and I have felt helpless.
I don't know if our friends actually think that they can find someone else that is better or if they have nothing else to focus on but their partner's faults.
My wife and I have a long time before we become empty nesters.
And, we are able to work through a lot of the problems that plague us together.
It is good to write this success story and know that if we ever get in a position where we lose the spark that one good solution might be to get out and camp together.
