How to Fish With Roumba Wake Bait

104 5
    • 1). Pair your Roumba wake bait with a 7- to 7 1/2-foot medium heavy rod and a reel spooled with 12- to 17-pound test monofilament or braided "superlines." This rig will let you make long casts and keep heavy bass from burying themselves in thick cover. Let the conditions dictate the size of your line. Use a lighter weight, low-visibility line on lakes that have clear water or heavy fishing pressure. Choose a heavier line for dingy waters and heavy cover.

    • 2). Cast and retrieve the bait like a topwater lure. Make a long cast, and let the bait sit on the surface for a few seconds. Raise the rod tip to the 1 o'clock position, and reel in the lure slowly and steadily. The bait will roll and wobble on the surface, creating a V-shaped wake. Depending upon the lure pattern you chose, the bait can resemble a wounded baitfish floundering on the surface, a swimming bullfrog or a crawfish skimming over submerged aquatic weeds.

    • 3). Work the lure like a shallow-running crankbait. The bait's lip allows the lure to dive 1 to 2 feet below the surface. Lower the rod to the 4 o'clock position and begin reeling fairly quickly and steadily. Bounce the Roumba Wake Bait off submerged cover, and then pause the retrieve. This allows the lure to back away from a potential snag, and imitates a disoriented baitfish. This tactic works well on bass in shallow cover in dirty or dingy water.

    • 4). Toss the lure around likely looking cover. Run the bait over submerged weed beds or parallel to the deep and shallow weed bed edges. Retrieve the lure through standing timber or over and around submerged brush piles. Bass lurk in thick cover and dart out to grab what looks like an easy meal.
