Kaleidoscope 2012 Arts Festival – Alexandria, VA

Kaleidoscope is a visual and performing arts festival held in a variety of venues in Alexandria, Virginia, showcasing more than 100 exhibitions and programs in visual art, theater, music and dance. The event presents a variety of entertainment throughout the months of September and October. The 2012 event introduces a new children’s festival with a line-up of nationally and critically acclaimed performers and hands-on activities.

  • It Runs in the Family
    Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue Alexandria, VA (703) 838-4827.
    September 7- 30, 2012, Thursdays noon-6 p.m.; Fridays noon-9 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sundays noon-6 p.m. The art exhibit explores how the need to create runs in families. Interpreting "family" very loosely, Del Ray Artisans asked area artists to show us their artistic heritage by submitting a collection of their family’s artworks. FREE

  • Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris
    MetroStage, 1201 North Royal Street Alexandria, VA (703) 548-9089.
    September – October 21, 2012, Thursdays & Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The performance is a blend of ballads and tangos, boleros, rock and classics all done with poetry and passion, transcending time, place and language. Tickets: $25-55.

  • Funny Money
    The Little Theatre of Alexandria, 600 Wolfe Street Alexandria, VA (703) 683-0496.
    September 8 –29, 2012(Wednesday-Sunday) 8:00 p.m. Wed – Sat 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The comedy follows the life of Henry Perkins, a regular hard-working guy who accidentally ends up with a briefcase full of cash and tries to escape his humdrum life with this new “funny money.” Tickets: $17-20.



  • Medea
    Port City Playhouse, 1819 N. Quaker Lane Alexandria, VA (703) 838-2880.
    Sept 14-29, 2012, 8:00 p.m.; Saturday Matinees 2:00 p.m. The ancient Greek tragedy based on the myth of Jason and Medea explores the timeless themes of passion, love and vengeance as Medea finds her position threatened in her family and world. Tickets: $16-18.

  • Wax Works Visual Arts Exhibition
    Athenaeum, 201 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA (703) 548-0035.
    Thursday, Sept. 27 - Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. The exhibit features local artists whose work explores the application, functionality and versatility of wax as a medium. Opening reception is Sept. 30, 2012, 4-6 p.m. Free.

  • Kaleidoscope for Kids Festival

    September 29-30, 2012, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Children and their families will enjoy more than 30 performances and workshops on storytelling, theater, dance, music, puppetry, bookmaking, drumming, poetry and more. Cost: $30/unlimited one-day pass for child and parent; or $10/event.

  • Cantorial

    October 27–November 1, 2012, 8:00 p.m. Wed – Sat, 3:00 p.m. Sunday. The mystery-comedy follows a young couple who renovate an abandoned synagogue in New York City into their posh dream home, and realize the synagogue’s cantor haunts the building. Written by American dramatist Ira Levin (author of “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Deathtrap”), this heart-warming and humorous production. Tickets: $17-20.
