Yasmin is an oral contraceptive used for the prevention of pregnancy. Oral contraceptives are effective means of controlling pregnancy. If they are used strictly in accordance with the instructions, there are minimal chances of conceiving. There are very low failure rates of this oral contraceptive.
Yasmin must be taken as exactly as per the directions at intervals that should not exceed 24 hours. It contains 21 yellow tablets of a monophasic combined hormonal preparation and 7 white tablets that are inert. The dosage is one yellow tablet for 21 days consecutively and then the 7 white tablets per menstrual cycle. There are two ways to start Yasmin namely the ‘Day 1' Start and ‘Sunday Start'.
As per the ‘Day 1' method, the patient is instructed to take one yellow tablet daily, starting form the first day of the menstrual cycle. Right from the first day of menstruation, the patient should continue taking the yellow tablets for 21 consecutive days followed by a single dose of the white inert tablet daily on menstrual cycle days 22 through 28.
Alternatively, in the ‘Sunday Start' the patient is instructed to take one yellow tablet of Yasmin daily, beginning on the first Sunday after the onset of menstrual period, followed for 21 consecutive days and then one white inert tablet daily on menstrual cycle days 22 through 28.
It is recommended that in either of the above methods, the patient should take the tablets at the same scheduled time daily, preferably in the evening or at night. All subsequent 28-day regimens should be followed by the patient on the same day of the week that she had started her first dose following the exact schedule. She should start with her yellow tablets on the next day after taking the last inert tablet. A word of caution as regards this medication is that Yasmin is not a cover against sexually transmitted diseases.
