Problems With Importing PowerPoint to Moodle
- Importing a PowerPoint presentation into Moodle can frustrate even the most advanced Moodle users. Moodle tends to accept simple slides over complex ones, and text-only slides work the best. This means no underlining, no graphics, no sounds and definitely no video. Foreign language slides -- even when text only -- can cause problems when importing them into Moodle. Bullet formats may or may not import properly, so try to avoid these as well.
- The Moodle "Import PowerPoint" document says that Moodle does allow importing graphics into a presentation. However, it also warns that multiple images may not import properly and the images will need to be "moved in the Lesson page." In other words, the user will have to manually position the image on the slide upon a successful import. The graphic may overlap text if it is not manually positioned.
- After importing slides into Moodle, you should check each slide in "Student view" individually to ensure that the importation worked properly. Student view allows the teacher to see exactly what the students will see on the Moodle pages. The layout and content of the slides may differ significantly from teacher view to student view. Even if the first few slides look right, check each individual slide for content, layout, and images when used. While checking the slides, look for graphics that overlap or obscure text.
- Upload the presentation as a "resource" into Moodle if the process of importing a Powerpoint into Moodle proves difficult or does not give you the desired results. You can do this from the course home page with editing activated. Click on the "Add a resource" drop down menu and click on "Link to a file or web site." Follow the instructions from there for uploading a file. Avoid giving viewers access to editing the file once downloaded by saving the file as a PDF, and then uploading the new PDF file as the resource.
