How to Tie Knots for Fishing Line

104 3

    Blood Knot

    • 1). Guide the line through the eye of a hook, lure or swivel. Loop the end of the line around the rest of the line a minimum of five times.

    • 2). Locate the gap that was left between the eye of the hook and the first loop. Take the end of the line that was used to loop around the line in Step 1 and pass it back through the gap.

    • 3). Apply some saliva to the entire knot to lubricate it. Pull the short end of the line through the loop, making sure not to pull it too tight. Pull steadily on the other end of the knot.

    • 4). Pull the knot tight by drawing on both lines located on either side of the knot. Pay careful attention that the ends do not slip out as you are pulling the lines tight. Use a smooth, steady motion when drawing the knot to avoid this problem.

    • 5). Trim the end that is close to the knot. Do not cut it off completely, but instead allow a small tag to stick out. This tag should be about 1/8 inch long.

    Shockleader Knot

    • 1). Use the shockleader knot when casting with heavy lures and weights. This knot will join stronger line, known as the shockleader, to a weaker main line to afford protection from the shock caused by the casting motion.

    • 2). Create a loose knot in the stronger shockleader line. Pull the main line through the middle of this knot.

    • 3). Loop the main line over and around the shockleader to form what is known as a uni knot. Make sure that each turn of the main line encloses both the shockleader line and the main line.

    • 4). Moisten both the knots with saliva. Tighten the knot in the shockleader line. Take hold of the tag end of the main line. The tag end is the part of the knot where a small piece of line is sticking out. Pull the coils together that you made by looping the main line in Step 3 by drawing on the tag end.

    • 5). Slowly ease both knots closer together. You may need to moisten them again with saliva. Trim the knots very close so that only very short tag ends are left.
