    • 1). Determine the North American Industry Classification System code for your business (see Resources). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, federal agencies use this code to classify various businesses to obtain statistical data about the U.S. business economy. You will have to provide this number when applying for a vendor's license.

    • 2). Apply for a vendor's license online (see Resources). Applicants can obtain a tax ID immediately through the Ohio Business Gateway. You must create an account before you use the system. You will have to provide a federal employer identification number or Social Security number, your company name and contact information. Pay for your application with a credit card or by writing a check.

    • 3). Register for a license through your county auditor. County auditors manage various fiscal concerns for their respective counties. They are also licensing agents for vendor's licenses. You may obtain contact information for your county's auditor from the website for the County Auditors' Association of Ohio (see Resources).

    • 4). Visit a taxpayer service center. You may obtain the form, as well as face-to-face assistance with questions you may have, from one of the eight centers (see Resources).
