The Future of Yoga

103 7
What Is the future of yoga? Yoga is more than 5000 years old and has been practiced in many countries throughout the ages.
It's scientific results and traditional practices have been a gift to mankind like no other.
Shrouded and protected from the average person, yoga is now available to everyone.
More and more hidden practices are being revealed, and all that is required is an open heart and dedication.
Yoga came to the west gradually, and by the late 60's, there was an explosion of yoga and other consciousness-raising techniques brought from the east.
Our Sri Gurudev said that the tables would be turned and that the west would become more of the leaders and practitioners of yoga and that the east would take on more western attitudes.
I notice this to be very true.
I teach in a very dense Indian community and invariably when I ask if they know or have done yoga they say no.
Most of them come to my classes because they are pregnant, but rarely attend my regular classes.
They come to this country for the American dream and have taken on a large workload like many.
Yoga is everywhere now, but where is it going and what has it become? When yoga was first introduced to this country, gurus came and taught in the original ways, but when you transplant a deep cultural path, it is bound to be altered when practiced by a new one.
Yoga has been transmuted in a myriad of ways to suit just about anyone.
You can find yoga being practiced in gyms, workplaces, schools, senior centers, hospitals, and of course yoga studios.
People are calling just about everything yoga.
Yogalates, balletyoga, kickboxing yoga, dance yoga, and god knows what else.
I guess using the word yoga has an energetic draw for people.
Even if it really has very little to do with it.
It concerns me that yoga has been diluted to this degree.
What began as an incredibly rich, deep and profound transformational tool for living in the world has now been reduced to a "yoga workout".
What is to become of yoga now? There are still many who are working to maintain and preserve the way in which yoga is taught and I feel we need to go back as we have strayed so far.
The world is in a state of crisis on so many levels.
The environment, the natural disasters, the economy, and the warfare are sending out the call for change.
The earthquakes and tsunamis are drastically changing the position and structure of the earth, as we are being summoned to wake up.
All is changing, as it always does, but now more than ever.
It is time, to go deeper, to contemplate your purpose, to reconnect to the deeper part of you that waits for your return,to seek peace, love, and compassion for all beings, all things animate and inanimate.
Return to Yoga.
