Career Options for a Cosmetologist
- Cosmetology doesn't require a person to practice her craft in a specific location, and a person can literally carry her skills and tools. Many cosmetologists become stylists at exotic luxury resorts or board a cruise liner and provide services on board. There may be seasonal restrictions to these careers, but if you're adventurous you can chase the summer sun throughout the world.
If you enjoy the celebrity world and high fashion, you can become a personal stylist to a celebrity, which will also include frequent travel. This requires a lot of focus and high energy. More important, you need to have a eye for "trends," as a career in this field requires you to stay up to date on the current, most stylish fashion. - If you like the business side of beauty, you may seek out a career with one of the literally hundreds of companies that provide beauty care products. These careers require you to understand corporate culture and may require additional education. Careers in these corporations involve sales, marketing and product development. Nonetheless, you could also start you own beauty care business or salon, or simply become a manager of salon. This allows you to learn about management, marketing and sales, but on a smaller scale.
- If you have a particular interest in conveying knowledge to others, consider teaching at beauty care schools. This requires some advanced coursework, especially if you want to teach courses at a community college or vocational school. Such a career can be quite rewarding.
- If you enjoy writing, there are a plethora of magazines dedicated solely to the world of beauty and fashion. You can begin this career by blogging online about beauty tips, submitting your written work to various beauty magazines, or by writing your own book about beauty. The key to this career is practice and experience.
- The baby boomer population is closely reaching old age and requiring the use of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Most of these places have salons within the facility. Working with elderly people can be quite rewarding and provide you with a unique skill.
Not often considered are the various State Departments that oversee and license cosmetology schools and individuals. If you enjoyed any coursework related to rules and regulations, you may be interested in pursuing a career in a state government or for a state licensing board.
