Streetwear Dresses - Bridging The Divide
In the world of skateboarding, for a long time, dresses didn't exactly have the best of reputations. Not only were they somewhat impractical, but for many people they also represented the struggle for gender equality in skateboarding, that is still continuing to this day.
The average female skateboarder would never have dreamed of wearing a dress, or indeed any item of clothing that was overtly feminine, preferring instead to dress like their male counterparts. And so, for many years the majority of female skateboarders wore what was then considered the streetwear 'uniform' - baggy jeans and graphic tee, teamed, of course, with the obligatory baseball cap.
Thankfully, nowadays things have moved on. Streetwear has evolved considerably since that time, and we as consumers have evolved with it. Dresses are becoming increasingly popular and many of the major streetwear brands have started running their own formal lines. So, it's now easier than ever before to find a dress that has you looking great, but still looking and feeling like 'you'.
Skater Dresses - Skater dresses are all over the high-street at the moment, so you're pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to fabric and style. They also tend to look great teamed with Doc Martin boots and a pair of whale-net tights.
Tartan - A tartan print dress is a great look to go for, it's a classic and timeless look that never really goes out of style in streetwear fashion. This may be because it was a notorious fashion staple for punks during the punk scene of the 1970s, which of course, has been one of the major influences of skateboarding and streetwear.
Stripes - Stripey dresses are a good option for a more casual daytime look. Always make sure that you choose a stripe that flatters your shape however, because horizontal stripes can make you look bigger than you actually are. The nautical look is hot in the world of streetwear right now, so a stripey dress is also the perfect nod to this trend.
Metallics - Metallic dresses are to be found most places right now, and can make a real impact if you're daring enough to wear one. Try not to go over the top though, we're going for sleek and sexy here - you don't want to end up looking like a deranged version of Lady Gaga.
Military - When shopping, if you find yourself getting a little carried away and you end up buying a dress which doesn't strictly fall into the category of streetwear, then not to worry, because you can give your look a streetwear twist by adding a little military style. Teaming some heavy military boots or a fitted coat with your dress, will still look smart enough for a formal event, but it'll also give your look that little bit of edge.
So, I think that we have successfully proved that the humble dress has as much right to belong in the world of streetwear and skateboarding, as D.C. shoes, hoodies and snapback caps.
