Ornamental sweet potato vines are popular because of their colorful foliage and the fact that they are easy to grow, indoors or outdoors, in either full sun or shade. The ornamental sweet potato vine is classified as an annual, although if the tubers the roots form are dug up and kept in a frost-free area with temperatures that are above freezing, the vine will re-grow the following season. - The dark purple, almost black in color heart-shaped, lobed leaves are the main reason this plant is grown, although additional interest is created when the trumpet-shaped pale purple flowers bloom. Place Blackie near light colored plants to make it stand out in the garden. Grow this plant in partial shade to intensify the color of the leaves.
- The heat tolerant copper-bronze foliage of Sweet Caroline Bronze adds a unique color to the garden or to containers. Like other sweet potato vines, Sweet Caroline Bronze is a low-maintenance plant that is an excellent choice for a ground cover plant or as a plant used in combination in containers, window boxes and hanging baskets.
- The lime-green lacy foliage of Illusion Emerald Lace really stands out against dark green foliage in combination plantings. This particular variety of the ornamental potato vine has all the features the other vines have, plus it is considered to be a pet-friendly plant, according to Proven Winners. Although it is a vigorous grower, an application of compost as well as regular fertilization during the summer months is beneficial.
- The multi-colored leaves of green, white and pink stand out in the garden, especially when this plant is paired with pink flowers. This particular variety benefits from being pinched, or cut back on a regular basis to control the growth of the plant. In comparison to other varieties, Pink Frost is a fast grower.
