Remove text from an image in Photoshop

Open the image up in photoshop - make sure it is editable (meaning not a .gif file, primarily) and create a duplicate of the background layer
by pressing Control + J on Windows, or Command + J on a Mac. You can hide this layer, all it does is ensure you have a backup copy should you mess up. Once the image is open, select the Clone Stamp Tool (Keyboard Hotkey "S") and choose the settings that I have provided in the image to the left. If a 50 px sized brush seems too big, you can decrease (or increase) the brush size as appropriate for the image you are working on. The clone stamp tool is the primary tool I use to remove text from an image in Photoshop.

Now select an area to clone from - this is the area your clone stamp tool will "repeat" when you actually use the brush on the image. You define the area to clone from (which is called the "source") by holding down the Alt key on Windows, or Option key on Mac, and clicking with your mouse button. The area I've decided to clone for the image I am using is shown in the picture to the left. When you brush over the text you want to remove, Photoshop automatically covers that area up using the source you have defined as a clone.

Begin brushing over the text with your clone stamp tool. This is done in the same way as you would use a normal brush, by simply clicking using your mouse button and holding it down, slowly stroking over the text. You will need to continuously redefine the source, because Photoshop's memory will still think the text is present, even after you draw over it. I usually get about two strokes in before I need to define the source again. It is very easy to go back and forth between the brush and the source tool by utilizing the Alt key (windows) or Option key (mac) as a hotkey.

Remove text from an image in Photoshop - Final Product

Continue brushing over the text until all of the text is removed from the image. You can then touch up the area - also with the clone stamp tool - by selecting different parts of your image as the source, to make it look more natural. Otherwise, the spot where the text used to be may look bald, or obvious that it was edited. It is possible to remove the text very naturally in photoshop, so that no one will be able to tell it was edited by an image editor. I've provided an example of this in the image to the left.
