If you or your children are fans of Lego products, the Mindstorm NXT 2.0 will not disappoint you. This toy offers hours and hours of fun and learning about technology and engineering while encouraging creativity and inventiveness. Lego first released the Mindstorm robotics toy in the late 1990's. The product has since gone through a couple of evolutions with the most recent version being the NXT 2.0.
The kit comes with several hundred pieces (and the pieces are small so this toy is definitely not recommended for young children due to the potential chocking hazard), color, light and touch sensors, easy to use drag and drop programming software and instructions for building 4 different robots although, the possibilities are endless for creating robots - just let your imagination be your guide.
Over the last few years, we have purchased many Lego toys for our son and it's always a fun family activity to sit down and work on putting these things together as a team. Building the Mindstorm NXT 2.0 was no different. This one is more challenging than some other kits we've bought but not so much that we became bored or overly frustrated with the process. The instruction booklet that comes with the product is illustrated which makes the construction process much simpler. In addition, you'll find many videos on YouTube featuring the NXT that you may find helpful.
The coolest part is playing with your robot once it's built and programmed. The sensors enable your toy to sense touch, color, movement and distance so that your robot can be programmed to pick up things, react to color and walk without bumping into walls. It certainly provides kids with a sense of accomplishment to see their creation in action and it's so much better for their mind and body to be active with a toy like this as opposed to sitting in front of the television set (which my son did far too often before this purchase).
The downside is that this product consumes batteries at a rapid pace. So, if you don't already have a battery charger and rechargeable batteries, you should consider this additional purchase so that you can avoid making dozens of trips to the store for replacement batteries.
