Women in Science & Engineering Scholarships
- The Association for Women in Science offers a variety of scholarships to both graduate and undergraduate women pursuing degrees in several scientific disciplines. For example, the Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award is available to undergraduates studying physics or geosciences, and the AWIS Undergraduate Award is available to undergraduates in any science or technology field. The Barbara Filner Award is available to Ph.D. students in science, and the Satter Award is available to Ph.D. science students who have postponed studies for at least three years due to family obligations. AWIS scholarships are usually awarded in the amount of $1,000.
- The organization Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) offers a variety of scholarships to women pursuing a graduate degree in science. Available sources of support include the $3,500 Adele Lewis Fellowship, the $3,000 Ethel K. Allen Fellowship, the $5,000 Eloise Gerry Fellowship and the $2,500 Hartley Corporation Fellowship. Although these programs are referred to as fellowships, they can be used for research at any accredited institution and so are more properly referred to as scholarships. Applicants for GWIS support must submit a $30 application fee.
- The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) offers scholarship money to female students in all branches of engineering. Several scholarships support study at the graduate level, and most scholarship programs offered are open to undergraduate applicants. Several SWE scholarship programs are offered specifically for incoming freshmen. Some SWE scholarships are limited to students who belong to minority or underrepresented groups. Scholarships are awarded in amounts ranging from $500 to several thousands of dollars. Applications typically must be received by February 15 for the following school year.
- Some science and engineering organizations only offer scholarships for women pursuing a degree in a certain field. For example, the Association for Women Geoscientists offers scholarships in amounts ranging from $500 to $6,000, but only to women pursuing degrees in a field of study related to the geosciences. Other organizations offer scholarships only to female science students from a certain geographical area. The Brookhaven Women in Science is such an organization, and offers scholarship support of up to $2,000 solely to female science students who are residents of certain counties in New York.
