    Cabinet Types

    • Build the cabinets above the garage workbench for easy access while you are working at the bench. The basic box is the foundation for every cabinet. Cabinets are either face-frame types or frameless. Face-frame cabinets have a frame that covers the front edges of the cabinet. The frame adds stability to the box and provides a place for hinges. A frameless cabinet is the basic box. Doors or drawers cover the front edges of the cabinet. Either face-frame or frameless cabinets will work for garage storage; however, do-it-yourself builders may prefer face-frame cabinets to cover any squaring imperfections.
Choose a sturdy wood type for the cabinets. Do not neglect style, but build for function. Style is important for the overall look of your garage. Maintain your home resale value by creating a neat and uncluttered workspace.

    Task Specific Interior Shelving

    • Partition the inside of the cabinets according to the size and quantity of objects you hope to store. Plan the shelf allotment before assembling the cabinet because you may need to cut notches into the sides of the cabinets for shelf support. Space shelves close together to create storage for boxes of screws, drill bits, washers and other small items that you need to keep organized. Make larger shelves to hold bigger items. Design the inside of the cabinets to match the projects you do at your garage workbench.

    Cabinet Doors

    • Build or buy doors for the cabinet. You do not have to create details for the door, but it should be sturdy. Think of the door as another place to store items. Add hooks or magnets to hang items such as hammers, wrenches or pliers for easy reach. Use full-wrap hinges because they wrap around three sides of the door and provide additional support.

    Installation

    • Mount hang strips to the back of the workbench cabinet. Screw a ledger strip to the wall. Attach the cabinets to the wall studs, for garages with studs. Use wall anchors to secure the cabinets to masonry walls without studs. If you are installing more than one cabinet, use the first to guide where you will place the others. If the cabinets are adjacent, without any space between them, try to attach them to one another before hanging them on the wall.
