The Bedse Caves Near Lonavala Are Quite Unexplored
Lonavala, a picturesque hill station in Pune district of the Indian state, Maharashtra, attracts numerous tourists every year from distant places. Embarking on sight-seeing trips in and around this region is one of the best things to do in Lonavala during a holiday. It gives travellers the opportunity to explore some of the most fabulous places in this part of Maharashtra. Almost all the tourists who have travelled to Lonavala in the past know about the two famous caves, Karla and Bhaja. The distance between both these caves is less than 10 kilometres, which makes it easy for tourists to explore the two of them on a single day. Most of the people who have been to these caves hardly know about Bedse Caves, which completes the trio of Karla-Bhaja-Bedse caves in Mawal region. All three of them belong to the early Buddhist period.
History of Bedse Caves dates back to the 1st century BC, when Buddhism witnessed a rapid growth in the Indian Sub-continent. Tourists would come across two main caves while visiting this ancient site. One is a prayer hall with a relatively larger stupa, and the other is a monastery. Carvings can be found in both the caves, but some are less ornate than the others. This group of caves are lesser known among most of the tourists, and this is the reason why one does not find much visitors at this place. It is recommended that tourists visit Bedse Caves early in the morning, as the beauty of carvings is enhanced when they are exposed to sunlight.
Though the possibility of having sunlight is far less during monsoon, it is the best time to visit this region; as it looks beautiful with lush greenery around this time of the year. Stairs that lead to Bedse Caves are properly laid out, and are easy to ascend. The climb to the top takes about twenty minutes. Upon reaching the top, tourists can enjoy unhindered views of beautiful natural landscapes that surround the Bedse Caves. Although they are smaller than Karla and Bhaja caves, Bedse Caves have some interesting carvings in them.
They can be reached from Pune by taking the National Highway 4 towards Mumbai. Upon reaching Kamshet, tourists can take the road that leads to Pavana Dam. After travelling for about 7 to 9 kilometres on this route, they come across a turn to the right, which is marked 'Bedse'. Upon travelling a distance of about 2 to 3 kilometres on this road, the travellers reach Bedse village. After walking from this point for about 0.5 kilometres, they would find the stairs that lead to the caves.
