The digital video format was engineered by an assembly of telecommunications developers. While they are essentially MPEG-4 videos, 3G2 files are optimized for playback on 3G network mobile phones. All 3G2 files are especially encoded to conserve a device's memory and disk space. The 3G2 format was preceded by 3GP.
