A Memory Loss Vaccine?

As you know, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease. But emerging research has shown that there are things that you can do to help slow down the spread of this form of dementia. A new discovery indicates that intravenous human immunoglobulin can actually help prevent the loss of memory that is so prevalent with Alzheimer's. The vaccine is not necessarily created for such a purpose, but this vaccine has shown in a few cases that it can still help fight this affect of Alzheimer's. It also seems to improve neuron plasticity, something that helps keep your brain's pathways open to learning new skills and improves cognitive functioning.

The results have, however, been quite inconsistent. This is thought to be, by some researchers, at least, because of a lack of a uniform approach to administering the vaccine. Different dosages within different stages of the disease have led to inconsistencies in the cognitive functioning of different folk with Alzheimer's.

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York has been at the forefront of this study. Researchers there believe that the differences in the outcome of this vaccine are due to inconsistencies in where and how much is administered. The vaccine was originally created for immunotherapy issues, but there are a few different off label uses also being explored, Alzheimer's being one of them.

If this proves to be successful, expect a lot more research to precede a general acceptance by the medical community. Medicine is a slow moving industry because safety is the number one concern. But with an effective tool like this might be in the fight against Alzheimer's and other dementia related illnesses. Alzheimer's is the most prevalent case of dementia in the world today, and there is no cure. Steps are being made every day in the fight against this dreaded disease, though, and this vaccine might just be one of the bigger steps made so far. There is still a long way to go before this vaccine is made accessible to the public through prescription, but this might be the first step before a cure is found.

Your brain cells in effect die off when they are exposed to Alzheimer's, thus creating memory loss and a lessening of cognitive functioning. This is why brain cell plasticity is so important. This is how brain cells create new pathways to send messages to other brain cells. Plasticity is a key part of learning new things and maintaining high cognitive functioning levels. There have been a lot of studies in regard to mental exercises that can help keep brain cell plasticity at a high level, but this is one of the first medical ways of doing so. This might be a huge step forward in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
