- 1). Find your Kohler toilet's model number. Lift the toilet lid; you'll see a series of molded or ink-printed numbers on the rear wall of the lid. In some cases, the numbers are printed on the inside of the lid.
- 2). Purchase a wax ring that is compatible with your Kohler toilet. Kohler does not include wax rings with its toilets, so you'll need to purchase one from a plumbing supplier or from Kohler's online parts store. Get a ring that is compatible with the model number of your toilet.
- 3). Line the floor surrounding the toilet with towels to collect excess water.
- 4). Turn the water valve connected to your toilet counterclockwise to cut off the water supply. Flush the toilet and hold the lever down for about 10 seconds to let water out of the toilet. Disconnect your toilet tank from the valve by unscrewing the supply line with an adjustable wrench. Catch any excess water with an empty bucket.
- 5). Remove the bolts securing the toilet to the ground. Most Kohler toilets have four bolts. Loosen the nuts with an adjustable wrench, then loosen the bolts in the same fashion before unscrewing them by hand.
- 6). Enlist a helper to assist you in lifting the toilet. Have a person squat on either side of the bowl, one lifting from under the tank and another lifting from under the bowl. Lift with your legs and place the disconnected toilet on a spare towel. Place the toilet upside down.
- 7). Remove the old wax ring, which is usually partially stuck to the toilet's bottom, by scraping it off with a putty knife. Scrape any remnants of the ring off the flange -- the rim of the opening on the bathroom floor -- with the knife as well.
- 8). Place the wax ring on the toilet horn, the circular opening on the bottom of the toilet where the old wax ring was, with the curved side facing down. Apply pressure to the ring so it doesn't fall off when you transport the toilet.
- 9). Screw the bolts back into the holes in the flange. Carry the toilet to the flange and place it so that the bolts come through the holes. Secure the bolts by screwing them in by hand and tightening the nuts around them with your wrench after they're hand-tight. Reconnect the water supply and turn the valve clockwise to allow water to flow back into the toilet.
