    Toronto

    • Toronto is Canada's most populated city and the capital of the province of Ontario. According to the 2006 census, over 5.1 million residents call Toronto home. In large part, the city owes its size to a steady stream of immigration. It ranks second in the world in terms of foreign-born residents. Though English and French are the two national languages of Canada, Toronto has such significant ethnic diversity that, after English, Chinese and Italian are the most commonly spoken languages in the city.

    Montreal

    • Montreal is the second argest city in the country. It reported a total population over 3.6 million in a 2006 census. The city is the provincial capital of Quebec -- the French-speaking portion of the country, with 66.5 percent of the residents speaking French as their first language. Residents note that many citizens have proficient understanding of both French and English. Such widespread bilingualism is an unusual feature. Montreal has less economic diversity than Toronto with a population comprised primarily of people with western European roots.

    Vancouver

    • In 2006, Vancouver, British Columbia, boasted a total population 2.1 million. It is the largest city in the less populated western part of the country. Vancouver is the nation's most popular city when it comes to hosting international events. It has an incredibly high tourism rate as well as rate of immigration. Over half the people do not speak English as their first language. Like Toronto, it has a considerable Chinese population.

    Ottawa

    • Ottawa is the capital city of Canada and the fourth largest in the country, with a population over 1.1 million. Over the years, Ottawa has spread out closer to the neighboring city of Gatineau. Though the cities have never been officially incorporated, Canadians consider both of them together to be the National Capital Region.
