How to Track a Stolen Boat
- 1). Go to Boatfax, a used boat database equivalent to Carfax. Click on the option "Check a Boat." Enter the boat's Hull Identification Number (HIN) and select "Search." Note that you will be required to pay $20 and register to view the complete report. If you find your boat listed on the site, you can notify Boatfax. Users who are considering purchasing a boat they suspect to be stolen are encouraged not to contact the seller directly, but to check the "Alert" link on the Check It page and notify police.
- 2). Contact natural resources police in your state as well as your local police department. Both agencies can play a role in the recovery process. Remember to file a police report so that you will be notified immediately if your vessel is recovered.
- 3). Visit websites like Boatman, run by Todd & Associates, which track recovered vessels and provide boat names, reporting agencies, police report numbers and recovery dates. You can list your stolen boat there in addition to tracking the recovery of other watercraft which may belong to you.
