Bingo And Its Effects

103 1
Bingo is a popular pastime for many folk, especially within the elderly population.
It is an exciting game that has simple rules and is even easier to follow along with.
But current research shows that this game is more than just a social activity.
It can boost thinking and cognitive levels amongst senior citizens, even seniors dealing with disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
The amount of thinking and effort that goes into playing a large Bingo card also can help with visual perception problems.
This research indicates that games like Bingo can be used to slow down the deadly spreading of these diseases.
Bingo is a fun game to play, but its cognitive therapeutic benefits are just starting to emerge.
As people age, their abilities to notice visual contrasts goes on the decline.
Marking Bingo cards fights this by forcing people to differentiate numbers and colors in their minds.
This decline in perception is exacerbated amongst people with dementia.
Bingo, then, looks like it can be a valuable weapon against the spread of this disease.
There is still only a little bit of knowledge about how people with decreased perception levels medically benefit from activities like Bingo, but the results speak for themselves.
In tests, people suffering from dementia with an increased exposure to extreme contrasts were able to better navigate around their living areas.
This reaches well beyond the Bingo hall, however.
Placing a black sofa in a white room can also lead to the same results amongst dementia patients.
Increases in contrast help people to better create mental distinctions amongst different items.
But Bingo is effective and even preferred because of its social aspects.
Bingo games bring senior citizens together and create friendships.
This is something that simple contrasts within the home cannot replicate.
Another result of this study showed that dementia patients will even eat better if their food and plates consist of extreme contrasts.
For example, a white plate holding contrasting colored foods on a dark tablecloth made the food more visible to the patient and thus increased the amount of food that was consumed.
This is a vital piece of information for treating dementia patients who will oftentimes lose weight as their disease progresses.
So while Bingo just happens to be another place in which these contrasts exist, it is important to note that senior citizens can benefit greatly from this game, and not just when they have a winning card.
As the old saying goes, "happiness is shouting Bingo!" but there is a lot more to this game than what first seems apparent.
Who would have thought that a game like this can have so many positive effects on the folks who take part in it.
