    Mac OSX

    • 1). Open the Garage Band application by locating it in the Finder and right-clicking on it. Select "Open." The file name is "Garageband.app."

    • 2). Select "Create New Music Project" from the pop-up menu. Name your project in the "Save As" box and click "Create."

    • 3). Select "Track" from the main menu and then select "New Basic Track."

    • 4). Drag the MP3 file into the New Basic Track.

    • 5). Press the Play button and listen for the place where you want to edit the MP3. You will see a horizontal bar traveling along the track. This is the transport bar.

    • 6). Drag the transport bar to different regions of the track by clicking on it and dragging. This is a quicker way to find the point where you want to edit if you have a general idea where it is, like near the end, or near the beginning of the file.

    • 7). Position the transport bar where you want the file to be changed.

    • 8). Shorten, split or join the MP3 file by clicking on the desired function under the Edit menu.

    PCs

    • 1). Locate an audio editing program on the Web such as those by Sony or Audacity.

    • 2). Download and install the program following the software developer's on-screen instructions.

    • 3). Open the program by selecting "All Programs" from the Start menu and selecting the program from the list by clicking on it.

    • 4). Choose "Open" from the File menu, then select the MP3 file from its location on the computer, and click "Open." The program will display a progress bar as it imports the file and will then display the file as a jagged line in a track on the workspace.

    • 5). Click anywhere on the jagged line in the track and the transport bar will appear as a thin horizontal bar.

    • 6). Click the Play button to listen to the track to locate the place where you want the edit to take effect. Alternatively, you can click on the transport bar and drag it along the track if you have a general idea of where the place is that you want to edit.

    • 7). Position the transport bar where you want the edit to happen.

    • 8). Choose Edit from the Main Menu and click the Edit function you want.
