How to Create a Hierarchy Table

    • 1). Open the Word document.

    • 2). Click the "Insert" tab on the command ribbon.

    • 3). Press the "SmartArt" button in the "Illustrations" group." The Choose a SmartArt Graphic dialog box opens.

    • 4). Click the "Hierarchy" option from the left pane. A gallery of hierarchy graphics appears.

    • 5). Select the preferred hierarchy graphic. For example, the Table Hierarchy option displays rectangular text boxes aligned as three rows. You will see one large box at the top, two medium boxes in the middle and three small boxes at the bottom.

    • 6). Click "OK." The graphic appears over the page layout. The SmartArt Tools ribbon appears.

    • 7). Type in the text boxes. You can also type text in the "Type your text here" pane that extends when you click the table's left arrow.

    • 8). Resize the window by clicking and dragging the frame handles.

    • 9). Edit the hierarchy by clicking the options in the Design or Format tabs in the SmartArt Tools ribbon. The Design tab contains commands for the layout. The Format tab contains commands for the Shape Styles and WordArt Styles.
