How to Plant Offsets

104 6
    • 1). Use a shovel or pitch fork to dig up the bulb and the surrounding offsets. Dig the shovel into the soil about six inches from the plant on all sides. Aim the shovel or pitch fork at a 45-degree angle into the soil and scoop up the bulb, offsets and soil.

    • 2). Divide the offsets from the original bulb with your hands. Be careful not to damage them or their roots.

    • 3). Inspect the original bulb. If it is in good shape, not shriveled or damaged, replant it.

    • 4). Inspect the offset bulbs and keep only those that appear healthy and undamaged. Choose the location you wish to plant the offsets.

    • 5). Dig small holes with a garden trowel. Plant the new offset bulbs three times the length of the bulb in depth. Make sure that the pointed end of the offset is facing upwards. Smooth soil over the planted bulb and water it to just moisten the soil. There is no need to water again until springtime, when you see the sprout above ground.
