  Nutritionists, also known as dietitians, manage food service systems as well as offer individual and group nutritional guidance. Although nutritionists work in a variety of settings, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most are employed by hospitals and nursing home facilities. As do many states, Oregon requires nutritionists to obtain licensure through the state's Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians.
  
  

Education and Experience

• The Oregon Board of Licensed Dietitian Examiners requires nutritionists to complete a bachelor or graduate-level degree in dietetics, human nutrition or food services management from an accredited college or university. To obtain experience in the field, Oregon nutritionists must complete a 900-hour internship under the supervision of a registered dietitian. According to the Oregon Administrative Rules, those that complete the eligibility requirements for the American Dietetic Association's Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) also satisfy those of the state. The CDR requires that prospective registered nutritionists complete a post-secondary program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education (CADE). They must also participate in a 900-hour practice experience during their academic training or complete a 1,200-hour internship after graduation.
  
  

Examination

• According to the state board, Oregon nutritionists must pass a dietetic examination in order to practice in the state. The Oregon board accepts the CDR's Registration Examination for Dietitians. This exam contains 125 to 145 questions that not only tests candidates' knowledge of nutrition but also requires them to apply that knowledge to solve problems, according to the CDR examination handbook. The examination covers several practice-related components including food science, nutrition care, counseling, management and food service systems. Nutritionists that pass the examination, earn the required degree and complete the supervised internship will obtain registered dietitian (RD) status from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  
  

Licensure Application

• Before practicing in Oregon, nutritionists will have to complete the state's licensure application available through the Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians website. Applicants must provide information about their academic background and dietetic experience. They also must provide explanations and supporting documentation for any criminal convictions or disciplinary actions taken against other licenses or certifications. In addition, they must submit a copy of their CDR card. A notary public must sign the application as well. The application, supporting documents and fees should be mailed to the state board.

Continuing Education

• Oregon nutritionists maintain active license status by completing 30 continuing education units every two years, as well as maintaining their CDR registration. According to the state board regulations, licensees that complete the CDR's continuing education requirements will also satisfy those of Oregon. Registered dietitians must report 75 continuing professional education units every five years, according to the CDR website. This equates to 15 units annually. In addition to refreshing dietetic knowledge and skills, continuing education provides nutritionists the opportunity to learn about topics that will enhance their practice. The CDR maintains an online database of approved continuing education providers.
