    Power Tool

    • The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) provides a set of guidelines for the safe use of all power tools, including the electric hand plane. These safety rules include never carrying a electric power tool by its cord and proper lighting to be used to protect the operator.

    Protective Equipment

    • The Tool Guru website says electric hand planes should be used with protective safety goggles and gloves to protect the operator from pieces of wood. Treated lumber and MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, boards are also treated with chemicals, requiring the hand-plane operator to wear a dust mask.

    Operation

    • According to the OSHA website, electric power tools such as the electric hand plane should use three-wire electrical cord to ground the tool. Electric hand planes should also be used and stored in dry conditions to avoid problems with electric shocks.
