How to Dispose of Hybrid Batteries

    • 1). Call the number printed on the hybrid battery to find out where you can take your hybrid battery locally for recycling. If your battery doesn't have a number stamped on it, call a local dealership that sells your make and model of hybrid car and ask if they accept old batteries for your type of vehicle. Even if the dealership doesn't, it should be able to refer you to a location that does, since car makers that sell hybrids generally have an institutionalized battery disposal and/or recycling program.

    • 2). Make arrangements to bring the battery in once you've tracked down an accepting outlet. Set up an appointment and, if you need a new battery, negotiate a deal. Also, ask about incentives to bring the battery in. At least one hybrid manufacturer, Toyota, has a program that pays people for used, recyclable hybrid batteries.

    • 3). Take the vehicle and battery to the drop-off location so the service team can remove the battery. While it's possible to remove the battery before transporting it, due to the danger of accidental electrical discharges, only a trained mechanic or someone who has a good deal of knowledge regarding how hybrid batteries work should remove a hybrid car battery.
