How to Run a Chkdsk Utility
- 1). Click "Start" and "Computer." Click the drive you wish to run chkdsk on. Click "Properties" on the toolbar.
- 2). Select "Tools." Click "Check Now" under "Error-checking." Click the check-box next to "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." That option is not mandatory, but it ensures chkdsk fully scans the disk for errors and bad sectors. The "Automatically fix errors" option is checked by default and ensures that chkdsk will attempt to repair any errors it finds.
- 3). Click "Start." Chkdsk will begin running if you chose a disk that's not already active; otherwise, you must restart your computer for chkdsk to begin.
- 1). Click the "Start" menu. Click "Programs" and "Accessories."
- 2). Right-click "Command Prompt." Select "Run as Administrator." Click "Yes."
- 3). Enter "chkdsk" followed by the drive name and "/f" and "/r." For example, to check disk C:, you would type in "chkdsk C: /f /r" and press "Enter" on your keyboard. If you are attempting to run chkdsk on an active drive, you will be asked if you wish to run chkdsk upon restart. Type "Y" and press "Enter." Chkdsk will begin when you restart your computer.
