- 1). Check the USB cable that runs from the HDD to the computer and make sure the cable is plugged securely into the port.
- 2). Turn on your computer and click on the "Drives" icon on your computer's desktop. A window will then open. If you are using a Mac you can check the desktop for a hard drive icon.
- 3). Look in the open window for the hard drive icon. The HDD will be listed as a removable drive.
