Where Are the Best Places to Stay in Barcelona?

101 7
If you are planning a trip to Spain's second city (or first city, depending on who you talk to, of course!) you'll need to think about your accommodation carefully. There are a lot of great places to stay in Barcelona, each neighbourhood with its own character, history, sense of style and local people, so deciding where you are going to stay during your break will in turn affect your vacation. Do you want chic and up market or traditional and authentic, with a different tapas bar on every corner? Do you want a mixture of the two, or a complete haven from all the hustle and bustle where you can have a massage and forget about the world? See, I told you there was a lot to think about when it comes to booking accommodation in Barcelona! Take a look at the following brief guide to help you along the way and ensure that your time in the wonderful city of Barcelona is as perfect and exciting as you could hope for.

Finding high quality yet cheap accommodation in Barcelona

When coming to Barcelona, most tourists will stay in any of the following three districts, since they are most central and very close to the beaches:
  • Ciutat Vella
  • Eixample
  • Sant Martí

This is where you will find the majority of hotels, hostels and general places to stay in Barcelona. There are also a great number of private apartments for rent in these three parts of the city, but, naturally, because these districts are so central and at the heart of all the action, you will find that they are generally more expensive in this area than anywhere else in the city.

If, however, you are looking to do the city on and budget and want to find cheap accommodation in Barcelona, the key areas for you will be the northern districts of Nou Barris, Horta-Guinardó and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Whilst they are a little further away, they are fantastically accessible by cheap public transport and very beautiful parts of the city nonetheless.

Keep in mind, however, that wherever you stay in Barcelona you will have easy and regular access to all areas of the city because of its fantastic network of public transport. Buses run all day long at high frequencies taking you to the very centre of the city itself (or wherever else you want to go to) and also run fairly late into the night, especially late on Friday and Saturday evenings. Speak to your tour guide, hotel receptionist or take a look online for your specific transport arrangements and prices. And remember to enjoy your time in the great city!
