2014 Poll Shows Support for Brooklyn to Host "16 Democratic Convention
A public opinion survey released by Quinnipiac University on September 2, 2014 found that a majority of Brooklyn residents and NYC residents overall supported the idea of the 2016 Democratic National Convention being held in Brooklyn specifically and in New York City in general.
As proposed, the Democratic National Convention would be hosted at the Barclays Center.
Q1. About Having the 2016 Democratic National Convention in New York City: When asked, "Would you like New York City to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016 or not?," 66% of respondents said yes, with equal percentages of men and women (about 65%) responding affirmatively.
79% of blacks and 57% of whites overall replied affirmatively. Nearly 70% of all Brooklyn residents surveyed supported the plan.
Q2: About Having the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Brooklyn: When asked, "If the Democratic National Convention is held in New York City in 2016, would you prefer that the convention be held in Brooklyn or Manhattan?," 47% voted for Brooklyn and 39% for Manhattan. Amongst Brooklyn residents over half, 54% , voted for Brooklyn. About the same percentage of Manhattan residents (54%) also voted for Brooklyn as the 2016 convention host. Â
"By a small 47 - 39 percent margin, with a split among the boroughs, voters prefer Brooklyn over Manhattan as the site for the convention", the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh- pe-ack) University poll finds.
Q3: Whether to Advise Friends to Come to the DNC in NY or Not? Finally, the poll sought to get people's personal reactions. As a proxy, presumably, for determining if respondents thought the DNC would be a pain in the neck, or an event to be proud of should it be held in New York City, the sample was asked, "If the Democratic National Convention is held in New York City in 2016, would you tell friends to come to New York City during the convention or tell them to stay away?" Overall, 45% said "come to NYC" and 41% said "stay away.
" In Brooklyn, 44% said they would tell friends to come. Not surprisingly, nearly 75% of Republicans surveyed said they'd advise friends to avoid the Big Apple if it were to host the DNC.
In commenting on the findings, "Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Maurice Carroll said, "Hey! Let's have a party! By 3-1, New Yorkers would like to play host to the Democratic National Convention in 2016. Being host would boost Mayor Bill de Blasio's national renown, and many New Yorkers like the idea that their mayor is turning into a national spokesman for liberalism. Good for the city, good for him, they say."
